Cougars take second at Sobrato tourney
The Christopher boys water polo team rebounded from an early loss at this weekend’s Sobrato Water Polo tournament to reach the championship game.
The Cougars faced off against Saratoga in the championship game, eventually losing 16-9 to take second place in the tournament.
CHS trailed 11-3 at halftime, but didn’t let that damper it’s spirits. Chris Spohr scored three times for the Cougars in the second half, helping his team outscore its opponents 6-5 in that half. Spohr was complemented by a goal from Matthew Higgenbotham — who had three total in the contest — and another from Zach Gallardo. Gordy Papalias also had a goal in the game for CHS.
“I have been waiting for Chris Spohr to find in “mojo” all year,” Cougars coach Paul Wells said. “I think he is back on target. Even the Saratoga coach commented on Chris’s shots from 9 meters away.”
Things didn’t start out at the Cougars had hoped in the tournament, falling to host Sobrato 10-9 on Friday. The two teams were locked in a 4-4 tie at the half and they exchanged leads five times in the second half. The Bulldogs came out on top, however, shooting the winning goal with 30 seconds remaining in the game. Higgenbotham led Christopher with five goals off 11 tries. Zach Syth, Spohr, Gallardo and Papalias each added a goal for the Cougars. Goalie Connor McConkie was electric, stopping 20 out of the 30 shots on goal.
The Cougars fared much better in their second contest on Friday, topping Harker Academy 11-9. The Cougars had a 3-2 lead at the half, as both teams displayed a physical defensive effort that limited scoring. Higgenbotham again led the Cougars, netting nine goals in the game. Jesse Calderon scored off a quick backhand shot in front of the cage, while Paplias added a goal from the outside. McConkie came up with 22 saves on 31 shots.
Christopher will be back in the water at 4 p.m. today, playing host to crosstown rival Gilroy.
