Gilroy's Monica Ruelas, left, and Briseida Perez, right, pose for a photo at the Chieftain Invitational Saturday at Toro Park.

Nothing got passed Gilroy’s Jackie Jauragui at the Leigh Roundup field hockey tournament.
The Mustangs’ netminder recorded shutouts in all four of the team’s games Friday and Saturday at Leigh High School — including the 1-0 championship game against Monta Vista High School for the tournament crown. Gilroy is undefeated so far this season.

Gilroy kicked off tournament play with a 2-0 win over Westmonte Friday before blanking Lynbrook and Cupertino 5-0 and 2-0, respectively.
Stellar play from Katrina ‘KC’ Carter and Maddy Cox earned them All-Tournament team honors.
Emily Boykin was also key for the Mustangs, playing virtually every second of every game as center mid.
Gilroy also topped North Salinas 4-2 on Thursday at home.
The Mustangs (7-0-1) will host Los Altos on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
CROSS COUNTRY
Mustangs get off to good start at Chieftain Invite
Gilroy’s Kairo Barrosa missed his personal best for the Toro Park course by just 15 seconds. But since it was the cross country runner’s first meet of the season, the future is looking bright.
Barrosa took 53rd for the Mustangs at the Chieftain Invitation Saturday in a time of 18:07. Gilroy coach Cathy Silva said the result has him pointed in the right direction to achieve his goals of another Central Coast Section berth.
Silva continued by saying Barrosa was a “true team leader” at the season’s inaugural meet, offering advice to his teammates and assisting his younger counterparts with their bibs and timing chips.

GIRLS WATER POLO
Cougars finish sixth at “Stinky Rose”
The Christopher girls water polo team finished sixth at its 2nd annual “Stinky Rose” tournament held Friday and Saturday at the school.
The Cougars finished 1-3 in the tournament, picking up a big 11-3 win over Live Oak Friday before falling 6-8 to league rival Stevenson in double overtime.  (Read about Day 1 here.)
Christopher took on San Benito in its final game of Round Robin play, but lost 16-5 to take its place in the 5th-6th place game. The Cougars faced Harbor in this match, but fell 21-10 to the Pirates to finish sixth.
San Benito took home first place after topping Woodside in the championship match. Aptos finished third, Stevenson fourth, Santa Teresa seventh and Live Oak took eighth place. The Balers’ Erin Hepner was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and at times required three defenders to stop her.

Christopher’s Ashley Irby was named to the All-Tournament Team. Irby had a tournament-best 20 assists, 14 steals and four goals through two days.  Coach Jim Shuster said:
“Ashley was instrumental in most every offensive play and resulted in almost every goal. On the defensive side, Ashley Irby took over the most difficult position, defending the 2-meter position with incredible intensity. Ashley Irby is on of the top Cougar players.”
The Cougars’ “secret weapon”, Sierra Ceballos, continued to shine. The freshman racked up 10 goals for her team in the two day tournament, even extending her foot to catch a pass which resulted in a goal.

“You cannot teach an athlete that kind of fancy footwork,” Shuster said. “That comes from raw talent and the will to win.”
Shuster said he also wanted to thank Margaret Seery for her “tireless efforts” along with boys coach Paul Wells for running the desk and ensuring the tournament was set-up.
Christopher (2-5 overall, 1-2 in league) will be back in the pool at 4 p.m. Thursday at San Lorenzo Valley.
