Gilroy Mustangs

Gilroy-area water polo teams made a splash in the Monterey Bay All-League awards.
Gilroy and Christopher High had a combined 19 players earning postseason honors which were announced Friday.
Ten awards were given to the boys in the MBL Pacific Division. Gordy Papalias (junior 2-meter defender), Connor McConkie (senior goalkeeper) and Matthew Higgenbotham (senior driver) were all named First Team All-League for Christopher. Brendan Reimer (junior 2-meter defender) and Sam Mandel (junior driver) were named to the First Team for Gilroy. Christopher’s James Walling (senior 2-meter offense) and Max Deliz (sophomore driver) as well as Gilroy’s Richie Bermea (sophomore goalie) were named Second Team All-League. Gilroy’s Christian Marquez (senior utility) and Christopher’s Walling were given the Richard Chamberlin Sportsmanship Award.
Gilroy-area teams racked up nine honors in girls water polo. Senior goalie Bella Marquez and 2-mete defender Shannon McAvoy were given First Team All-League honors for Christopher and Abby Kienle, senior driver, earned the honor for the Mustangs. Earning Second Team All-League honors are Sabrina Seery (junior driver, CHS), Ashley Shuster (senior 2-meter defender, CHS) and Katie Clark (senior driver, GHS). Christopher’s Cristina Mendoza and Kienle were given to the Richard Chamberlin Sportsmanship Award and Christopher’s Malaya Santos, freshman driver, was named the Freshman of the Year.
Christopher had four players earning volleyball league honors in the Gabilan Division. Senior setter Cheyenne Dela Merced, senior libero Michelle Toves and junior opposite hitter Olivia Tabron were named second team All-League. Senior Emily Buchner was named to the “Pursuing victory with honor” sportsmanship team for the Cougars. In the Pacific Division, three Mustangs earned honors. Nicole Green and Clarrisa Quezada were named Second Team All-League, while Bailie Erickson was named to the sportsmanship team.
