This isn’t your run-of-the-mill, black-tie affair kind of proms.

Six northern California bands are teaming up to give Gilroy a different kind of show – what they call a “Punk Rock Prom.”

The punk rock show will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Strand Theater in Gilroy. Tickets are $10.

“It’s sort of the anti-prom, but it has a prom theme,” said Woody Harper, who plays in the Gilroy band Varsity Squad and organized the show. “We’ll have a gazebo for pictures and a prom king and queen.”

Harper encourages people coming to the show to dress up for a punk-rock-style prom by going to thrift stores. While the show does has a prom theme, Harper said it’s not just for high-school kids.

“It’s all-ages,” he said. “Anyone from infants to geriatrics can come to the show.”

The bands playing at the Strand include the Lonely Kings and Marker, both from Santa Cruz; Sacramento-band Red Top Road; San Jose’s H.B.A.; and Gilroy bands Varsity Squad and Last Call.

“This is sort of the underdog prom,” Harper said.
