Lady Mustang hoops fall in outbracket game to host Davis,
68-51
MODESTO – The Lady Mustang basketball team’s extended post season came to a crashing halt Monday night in Modesto, as the garlic girls dropped a 68-51 decision to Grace Davis in the CIF NorCal Regional Division I Playoffs.

In the outbracket contest, Gilroy fell behind early, allowing host Davis to take a commanding 29-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Mustangs refocused in the second quarter, matching Davis with 11 points apiece, but they still trailed by 22 at the half.

Gilroy was outscored 20-15 in the third quarter, but responded with an 18-point fourth quarter, compared to eight by Davis, to close out the game.

The season-ending loss left the Lady Mustangs with a 13-17 overall record, while Davis boosted its overall mark to 28-4.

Sophomore point guard Kristen Campos led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 15 points, while senior center Sarah Hoeft added 14 points. Gilroy’s offense also came from junior Shante Mancera (six points), junior Amy Trujillo (five points), sophomore Katherine Hussey (four points), senior Laila Correa (three points), junior Amanda Link (two points), and junior Michelle DiFiore (two points.

Mancera drained a pair of three-point buckets, while both Trujillo and Campos netted one trey each.

Davis was led by Ashley Walker’s 20-point effort and Latonya Dunham’s 16-point effort plus 12 points from Maria Sanchez. Davis also netted four three-point buckets in the winning effort.

After finishing 3-7 in the Tri-County Athletic League and 11-15 overall, the Lady Mustangs successfully petitioned their way into the Central Coast Section Playoffs and made a run into the championship game. Gilroy defeated Piedmont Hills and top-seed Alisal before falling to Salinas in the finals, 68-51.

Second-year head coach Kari Williams built her resume up even more, following up last year’s run into the CCS Semifinals with a Nor-Cal berth this season. The Lady Mustangs lose only four seniors to graduation with eight players set to return next year.
