SAN JOSE – Maximilian Ramirez IV, an eight-year-old Gilroy native, captured the California state title in martial arts sparring Feb. 21 at a karate tournament held in San Jose. Ramirez outscored his finals opponent 6-4 to capture the championship. The tournament was sponsored by the Bay Area Sports Karate Association. Ramirez is trained by local instructor Sensei Valerie Boe, a third-degree black belt of Dragon Cloud Dojo-Gilroy. Ramirez has been training under Sensei Boe for one year and plans to defend another title he acquired late last year at the 5th Annual BASKA Championship Belt Finals being held Oct. 23-24 at Grand Sierra Resort & Casino in Reno.
