Former executive director left after four years with
non-profit
Rebekah Children’s Services is on the prowl for a new executive director.

John Wilkinson, the former executive director, resigned in September, after four years with the non-profit family services organization, to be with his sick son in Montana, according to Rebekah Children’s Services Spokeswoman and Chief Fund Development Officer Eleanor Villarreal.

Since Wilkinson’s departure, Villarreal and the organization’s other three top executives have been filling in the gaps.

CompassPoint Nonprofit Services will direct the search for Rebekah Children’s Services, which runs the IOOF Children’s Home in Gilroy. The organization administers programs for families and children in Gilroy and Santa Clara County and some programs are funded by the federal government.

The board selected CompassPoint Nonprofit Services because “Since they’re non-profit they understand what it takes to work in that (environment),” Villareal said.

The board also had to develop a job description before opening the position to the public. The job announcement stipulates that Rebekah’s is “seeking a leader who is visible in the community, understands and embraces the diversity and culture of the South County community and is a consensus builder who leads by example in values and in actions.”

Minimum qualifications include:

– Master’s degree in social work, management or a closely related field

– Five years of senior-level experience with a nonprofit social organization, preferably in California

The top five to eight candidates will be selected for an initial interview and the remaining two or so will be interviewed by the board. Villarreal said Rebekah’s hopes to make an offer by April 20 and have the position filled by June.

About 82 percent of Rebekah Children’s Services $12 million annual budget is funded through the Santa Clara County and the state. The 11-member board of directors is elected by the California Rebekah Assembly and the Odd Fellow Grand Lodge.

The Odd Fellow-Rebekah Children’s Home of California was originally founded as an orphanage in 1897. Today, Rebekah’s offers a variety of health and behavioral services to children and their family members. The nonprofit also works with foster care and adoption services.
