PREP ROUNDUP: CHS volleyball upends GHS

Two one-run victories on Playoff Night earned the Borrachos the Men’s Winter Softball League championship Wednesday at Las Animas Park.

The Borrachos and Those Guys shared second place in the eight-team league with 6-2 records. North Bound earned the first seed in the postseason with an 8-0 record, while fourth-seeded Good, Bad & Ugly sported a 3-5 mark.

The Borrachos slipped past Those Guys, 9-8 in the semifinal. Those Guys pulled into an 8-8 tie in the top of the seventh when Johnny Andrade doubled and scored from second on Tyler Maslanka’s sacrifice fly. The Borrachos notched the win when Don Rose lined a two-out single to center to drive in Mario Uribe.

John Serrine went 3-for-3 and Ricardo Rascon provided a two-run single for Those Guys. Danny Melendez helped the Borrachos’ cause with a triple and single, driving in three runs.

North Bound joined the Borrachos in the finals with a 26-5 win over Good, Bad & Ugly. Cameron Bautista went 4-for-4 for the winners. Jeff Aguirre homered and Andrew Mokres tripled and singled for the losers.

The Borrachos took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the finals as John Gonzalez, Matias Franco and Pablo Perez produced consecutive one-out hits.

North Bound erased a 3-2 deficit after four innings by striking for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Hernandez tripled and scored the tying run on brother Matt Hernandez’s single. Singles by Danny Pequeno and Bobby Granados gave North Bound the edge.

Julian Tellez hit a two-out triple in the sixth and scored on a Jade Garcia single as North Bound carried a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning.

Mando Uribe and Gonzalez hit singles to ignite the Borrachos’ seventh-inning comeback. A Matias Franco sacrifice cut the deficit to one run. Perez tripled to tie the score, then gave the Borrachos a 6-5 lead by scoring on a Melendez sacrifice fly.

Mike Hernandez went 3-for-3.
