GILROY—Summer Fun rolled past four opponents to capture the C Division title of the 42nd annual Co-Rec Fourth of July Tournament at Las Animas Veterans Park.
A 10-run explosion in the third inning ignited Summer Fun past the Goonies in the finale Friday. Daniel Vasquez went 4-for-4 for the champions. Armando Avila lined a homerun, double and single for the Goonies.
Summer Fun needed a four-run rally in the top of the seventh inning to outlast the Bottle Rockets Wednesday in the opener of the double-elimination event. Johnny Bueno hit a game-tying RBI-triple and scored on an infield error to cap the comeback. Joe Cano hit two homeruns for the Rockets.
Vasquez and Dave Meacham each garnered five hits as Summer Fun defeated Synergy 17 by a 20-6 count Thursday. Anthony Martinez went 3-for-3 for Synergy 17.
Summer Fun reached the finals with a 15-7 nod over the Goonies. Art Naranjo sparked the winners with a triple, double and single.
JR’s Crew won three games Friday in the loser’s bracket before finishing third with a 21-16 loss to the Goonies.
JR’s Crew opened the holiday morning with a 14-0 win over Cal Silk Screening. The Crew followed with a 17-7 decision over Synergy 17. Frankie Martinez’ RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh lifted JR’s Crew by Heavy’s Grill 8-7. The Grill finished fourth with a 2-2 mark.
Don’t Trip defended the B Division title with a 16-8 verdict over Self Made in the finals at Christmas Hill on the Fourth of July.
Joel Lopez collected three hits and scored three runs for the champions in the final contest.
Don’t Trip began play Wednesday with a 16-6 victory over Self Made, then won Thursday’s game over I Got This 25-7. Don’t Trip edged Most Wanted 12-11 to reach the finals, forfeiting once before topping Self Made in the deciding contest.
Most Wanted claimed third place after dropping a 15-11 contest to Self Made on Friday. Team Fatal, with a 1-2 mark, settled for fourth place.
