Red Phone: Crossing the line

There have been stories in the paper about the lack of parking
in downtown Gilroy. It is a problem and always has been. On this
same subject, where is the parking going to be for the new library?
It seem that the library building will take up most of the
property. I have asked several people who work at the library. They
seem to think we will be parking across the street. That sounds
dangerous with the little ones running back and forth across the
street.

Ah, finally a day of rest. Red Phone’s busy phone lines have been ringing off the hook until Thursday, when a massive outage knocked out cell and land line phones. But keep the calls coming in as soon as the phones are back up.

Dear Where to Park,

Parking in Gilroy can indeed be tough sometimes, and we share your concerns about children crossing a busy street. But there is more parking coming that will hopefully ease the problem, said Public Information Officer Joe Kline

“Regarding parking for the new library, in addition to existing parking on the east side of the library site, along Rosanna Street, east of City Hall, and west of Wheeler Community Center, and the west side of the new building, on Hanna Street and between the PD and the Senior Center, there will be new parking lots constructed in an area just west of the Senior Center, and along the north side of the new library between Sixth street and the new building,” Kline said.

Where’s the green spirit?

“I just called City Hall to inquire about the Earth Day celebration they usually hold? They informed me that there would be no celebration. Is that because of the recession?”

Dear Earth Lover,

Good to know someone is looking forward to April 22. You’re right that the city usually coordinates an Earth Day celebration in Christmas Hill Park.

However, “due to personnel and budget cutbacks, the City will not be coordinating an event. In the past, the event was coordinated by the Environmental Programs Coordinator and Environmental Programs Assistant, with support from Parks staff. Those two positions were eliminated with the recent layoffs. The City did offer to provide the park, some supplies – such as tables, chairs, large canopy, etc. – to outside groups wishing to coordinate the event, but to date no one has stepped forward to fill the coordination task.”

So, good caller, perhaps you’d like to step up to the biodegrable corn-product plate and lead a bit of a celebration.

If anyone else knows of Earth Day activities, call the Red Phone and we’ll spread the word.
