“I wonder if the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce is doing the House Light and Decorating contest this year? They didn’t do it last year.”

Dear Competitive-Santa,

This time of year brings out different perspectives and outlooks in most people. One of the things affected by this is the energy and effort people put into making their homes look festive.

Susan Valenta, president of the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber has not led the decorating contest in a couple of years and will not be doing this event this year either.

If anyone has any concerns with this, they can call the Chamber at 842-6437.

The Dispatch took the lead in the decorating contest last year but will not be doing so this year.

Meanwhile, Red Phone loves seeing the lights and decorations throughout the city. So, residents can send Red Phone locations to cool holiday lights and we might be able to send out a photographer.

The second page of the Dispatch has also recently started publishing community art as well as the usual nature art. So, feel free to send your own photos of your holiday lights and decorations to

for a chance to have your photos get published.

All eager for sign to be gone

“I’ve been gone for five weeks and about five weeks ago there was talk that the hideous sign – Chips N Salsa – on Old City Hall was going to be taken down, and it’s still there. When is that going to be removed?”

Dear It’s All in the Eye of the Beholder,

An unattractive sign that large in such an obvious location can grow to be quite bothersome.

Joe Kline, public information officer for Gilroy, said the man leasing the building has contacted two companies soliciting bids for the removal of the sign, since it is so large.

“It sounded like he is as eager to get it down as we are,” Kline said.

“It’s usually up to the lessee to pay for any modifications, remodeling, etc. that may be required to fashion the facility to the use he intends to use it for,” he said of the owner of the new business, Saffron Restaurant.

Rest assured – it seems as if this eyesore should be gone fairly soon.

Sidewalks soiled already

“The beautiful new sidewalks in downtown Gilroy are so dirty now. Why aren’t they kept clean and possibly a place for pedestrians to toss their gum other than sidewalks? Like a tall sandbox for cigarettes too.”

Dear Clean-Pedestrian,

Dirty sidewalks are almost as bad as ugly signs on the buildings.

Joe Kline, public information officer for Gilroy, was again contacted and said brand new trash receptacles, recycling containers and cigarette receptacles were installed downtown this past October. So, keep your eye out, dear reader, because these bins are out there for your use.

As for the dirty sidewalks, Carla Ruigh, operations services manager, said “the city only has funding to power wash the sidewalks once or twice a year. The last power wash was in July.

“A partial cleaning of the seating areas downtown was done two-three months ago. The next power wash will not happen until spring/early summer, subject to availability of funding.”

But in the meantime, if you see any stray trash, feel free to do your part and pick it up.
