“I drove by the Lily Gardens Apartments on Lilly Avenue. There’s a carport about 10 cars long that fell down a few weeks ago. It was reported to the fire department and police department. It’s obviously a code violation. The materials from the carport are sticking up everywhere. There’s a lot of kids in this neighborhood, and it’s not cordoned off. It hasn’t been cleaned up.”
Red Phone: Dear Safety Conscious, Code Enforcement Officer Scott Barron, who handles safety issues for the city could not be reached for comment. But the apartment owners are aware of the hazard and are working to repair it, said a manager who refused to give her name.
The area has been taped up to keep people away, and a contractor has been hired to fix the port that was damaged by rain, she said. She didn’t know the time frame, but said it should be fixed soon.
Election signs at schools
“I had a quick question. I was driving down the down the driveway at Solsano Middle School this morning and I noticed on the chain link fence that there were two signs for Francisco Dominguez, who is running for state assembly. I didn’t think on public school property you could put signs like that up and endorse specific people. I called the office and they said the City of Gilroy owns the gymnasium so people can put it there.”
Red Phone: Dear Signs Of The Times, The City of Gilroy usually requires people to obtain permits before placing any sign up. But political signs are an exception, according to the Gilroy Zoning Ordinance. They are allowed on private property with the owner’s permission 90 days before an election and must be taken down 10 days after an election. And they can’t be placed on any portion of a street, sidewalk or public right-of-way.
Solorsano Principal Salvatore Tomasello said the area in question is part of the Glen Loma properties and not part of the school, which would make it OK for signs to be posted there.
