At the end of Santa Teresa Boulevard after Third Street going
over the bridge there’s a group of homeless people. There was one
guy, now there’s a bunch of guys, and it looks like they’re living
there. Bikes, shopping carts
– and some of the bikes look new – can be seen. There’s trash
and cases of beer. We walk there early in the morning, and I know
the kids ride bikes to school in the morning. Don’t know if anyone
can do anything about it. They’re living under the bridge and
there’s more and more crap there every
day.

Police say they are working on multiple transient locations

Dear Annoyed, Red Phone contacted Gilroy police Sgt. Jim Gillio, who said the department is currently working on multiple transient locations similar to this one.
“Thank you for the information. This has been forwarded to our patrol supervisors for action,” Gillio said.
So keep an eye on the area good caller. And, if things don’t improve to your satisfaction, give Red Phone a holler.
Weeds have been removed
“Hi Red Phone, I live on Kentwood Court and my home backs up to the Uvas Creek levee. This is a very busy area with hundreds of people using the levee each day. The city has generally had the area plowed, but this year the dry grass has been allowed to grow to six-feet and is ripe for a large and costly fire. We are very concerned and would appreciate your help to get the area plowed. Many thanks.”
Dear Don’t Want to Get Burned, Red Phone contacted Operations Services Manager Carla Ruigh, who said the area has been plowed, but then good caller you probably already know that. Thanks for reading.
Garbage and recycling are separated during pick up
Red Phone: In the past several months, Red Phone has received two questions regarding how and when trash and recyclable material is separated. Both readers said it looked like garbage and recycling were being tossed into one container in the back of a garbage truck. South Valley Disposal and Recycling General Manager Phil Couchee however, said that was not the case. Trash was going in one container, while recyclable material was going into a second container. Leslie Wilcox, environmental programs assistant for the city of Gilroy, said recyclables collected at the curb as part of the city’s new single stream recycling program are kept separate in the split body trucks.
“We thought we would send you a photo of the truck since sometimes a visual aid can explain the situation better than a verbal description.”
Thanks for the photo Leslie, and hopefully this assures readers that the new program is running correctly, despite what they think they are seeing.
