Red Phone: Low branches need to be cut

Is there any word yet on when something will be done about the
safety of the intersection of Cougar Court and Day Road?
“Is there any word yet on when something will be done about the safety of the intersection of Cougar Court and Day Road? I had somebody attempting to make a right onto Day from Cougar against the red light. Had he been a second quicker, or me a second slower, he wouldn’t of seen his error in time. There is no way I could brake enough and there is no way I could dodge enough to get past the curb and into the other lanes, if they were even open. My truck into somebody’s driver door will not be pretty. I could probably walk away afterwards, but I do not wish to be involved in a fatal accident no matter what or who is at fault. The hill side needs to cut back. Even 10 feet will increase visibility immensely. Or the traffic flow needs to be changed and Cougar Court becomes a one-way street with no exit onto Day Road at all. Must we wait for the inevitable death, or can we take action now?

Red Phone: Dear Safety Conscious, This intersection does indeed have the potential for a serious accident, and Red Phone has received questions on this area before. The Gilroy Unified School contacted the landowner on the west side to try to get permission to scale back the hill, but the land owner was unresponsive, said City Traffic Engineer Don Dey. The district plans to contact the owner again to try to change his mind about allowing the work to be done on the private property.

Until then it is important for everyone to use caution at this intersection.

“If everything is functioning correctly, the light doesn’t stay red for that long,” Dey said. “When a sign says no right on red, it means no right on red. If people chose to disobey it, they put everyone at risk.”

Superintendent Deborah Flores did not return calls seeking comment by press time.
