“I was just wondering why the city of Gilroy did not make a pedestrian overpass so the kids from the neighborhoods could go and walk over Santa Teresa Boulevard instead of crossing Santa Teresa at the light. There are no sidewalks at the northern end of Santa Teresa near the high school, which is very dangerous. The speed limit is 45 mph, but those cars are going at least 50, 60 or more. A pedestrian is going to get struck and killed while crossing the street.”
Red Phone: Dear Crossed Over, There currently aren’t any pedestrian overpasses in the city and there probably won’t be for awhile.
“The city has never entertained a discussion about an overcrossing of Santa Teresa,” said City Traffic Engineer Don Dey. “The cost of such an overpass is prohibitively expensive.”
In addition to the expense, the overcrossing would receive limited use, he said.
“Most people would cross at a grade rather than going over a hill,” Dey said. “They generally take the shortest, easiest pass.”
Good caller, you are right about the intersection being dangerous. So, to anyone who drives this stretch of road, please slow down. The minute or two that you would save is not worth the safety risk to the people walking along the road.
Plants need watering
“Will the city please water and trim the plants on Santa Teresa between Hecker Pass Highway and El Dorado Court. They are dying from lack of water and at the same time are overtaking the sidewalk.”
Red Phone: Dear Maintenance Needed, The reason the plants are starting to dry out is because an irrigation controller in the area has been damaged, said Bill Headley, the parks and landscapes supervisor. The system was repaired last week, and the city has scheduled pruning to be done on the plants in the next two months, he said.
