“I’m a local bicyclist. I cycle from Gilroy to Morgan Hill and to San Jose and beyond that sometimes. In the past two months I have had to replace three tires and seven tubes because of debris on Santa Teresa Boulevard in Gilroy between Masten Avenue and First Street. How often does Santa Teresa Boulevard get swept, if at all? Thank you.
Red Phone: Dear Stuck In Debris, You are not alone in your frustration by the debris that tend to pile up along the roads. While adding extra liners to your tires and tubes may ease the problem somewhat, it won’t help if you pick up a nail.
This area tends to be especially problematic with all the activity coming and going here. Any time there is a lot of construction going on such as on Hecker Pass, there is bound to be additional debris.
Recology South Valley, which the city contracts with for its street cleaning services, cleans the area once a week but only goes from First Street up to Sunrise Avenue, said Phil Couchee, Recology general manager.
Red Phone placed a call to the county’s road maintenance division. See what they had to say about county roads on Tuesday.
Debris along Camino Arroyo
“What would it take to get a street sweeper to drive over the shoulder of 10th Street, and along the roadway between 10th and Sixth by Wal-Mart and Costco? There is a significant amount of debris on the shoulders. That is the only place for bikes to ride. In some cases, there are no sidewalks, so people are walking there with strollers as well.”
Red Phone: Dear More Debris, Recology cleans the area along Camino Arroyo from Sixth Street to 10th Street weekly, Couchee said. “There has been a lot of harvesting activity at the corner of 10th and Camino Arroyo the last couple of weeks,” he said. So hopefully this will be only a seasonal inconvenience.
