Gilroy High swimming may not have been at its best Friday afternoon, but four swimmers made the most of the final Tri-County Athletic League dual of the season between the host Mustangs and the Alisal Trojans.

Swimmers Brandon Creswell, Zack Kendrick, Eddie Malick and Daniel Shields helped Gilroy beat the Central Coast Section championships’ mandated mark in the 4×400 free relay by just more than a second. The quartet combined for a time of three minutes, 36.98 seconds, just under the needed time of 3:37.99.

“We’ve had some good swims, some time improvements,” Gilroy coach Tom Clark said of the meet.

With the male Mustangs qualified in all three relays, Clark said he will be able to take two extra swimmers to CCS, which takes place May 16-17.

Alisal’s program is a work in progress, which allowed the Mustangs’ boys and girls squads to win by substantial margins. The boys defeated the Trojans 132-22, while the girls won 104-42.

Before CCS, GHS will compete in the TCAL championships this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Alvarez High School in Salinas.
