Often times you will hear players comment that they didn’t
release the club through impact. For the novice player, this sounds
like letting go of the club and watching it spiral down the
fairway. Though the feeling is close the results are much
different.

To release the club simply means to let the right wrist roll over the left through impact. What this does to the clubface is that it closes it through impact and squares the club up so you can hit a straighter shot. Most golfers suffer from slices or hitting it right of the target. This often is the result of not releasing the club through impact.

A release is not the right hand flipping under and lifting the ball it is definately the right hand rolling over the left. There is a good drill to help you feel this. Keeping both feet together simply take the club half way back and hinge on the backswing. At this point the butt end of the club should point at the ball. Now pull the club down and strike the ball releasing the club through impact. You want to finish at the same halfway point at the follow through with the butt of the club once again pointing at were the ball was. By keeping your feet togerther it isolates the wrists and forearms so they do the work and not the legs.

Remember, when all else fails, take a lesson. You’ll be surprised how much we can help.
