A resident of San Jose, Richard “Dick” Bugg passed away surrounded by his family September 29, 2015.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Maxine, daughter, Nadine DaRoza, and sons, Mickey (Cindy) Wark, Dan (Linda) Wark and Jason Bugg; grandchildren Laura (Alex) Naccarato, Jamie Wark, Bret Wark, Brandon Wark, Angelina Bugg and great grandson Wyatt Naccarato.
Richard was born October 15, 1935, in Tulare, CA.
Richard was an avid baseball and football player at Tulare High, earning the Tri County Valley award for all his achievements. He went on to Fresno State where he played football and baseball. He then went on to play minor league baseball for the Detroit Tigers.
After spending two years in the army as part of the United States Army Choir, he returned to Fresno State earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and a minor in music.
In 1959, Dick moved to San Jose, CA to earn a teaching credential. To support his education he accepted a job at The Burger Pit, where he met the love of his life, Maxine. He spent the next 25 years with The Burger Pit, mentoring numerous young people, instilling his work ethic and giving them the confidence to follow their dreams.
Dick then pursued his original dream of teaching and taught in San Jose and Hollister Schools until his retirement in 2000.
Never a man to be without work, he joined Orchard Supply Hardware working part time until being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
The last 50 years, Dick instilled his love of baseball throughout Santa Clara and San Benito County, coaching at several high schools and Gavilan College. He was “Coach Bugg” to multiple generations of aspiring baseball players. He believed in every one of his players and would spend numerous hours helping them to improve.
He was most proud of his son, Jason’s accomplishments in playing baseball. He loved his family deeply and was always there to see his grandchildren participate in their many activities. He was their biggest supporter.
The family would like to thank Stanford Hospital and the Dr. Bruno Medeiros Clinical Trial team who allowed the last 14 months of his life to be spent seeing his Giants win the 2014 World Series Championship, being honored by the Giants through Coaches Against Cancer, and celebrating family gatherings as he was always the happiest when he had his entire family together.
