San jose – Jerry Hoffman believes boxing fans will witness something special at Saturday night’s “THE RIOT.”
“I don’t think there has been a more significant fight in San Jose in the last twenty years, if not more,” Hoffman said at Wednesday’s press conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in San Jose.
Referring to the entire six-bout card that will take place at the San Jose Civic Auditorium, Hoffman is promoting a diverse group of fighters from around the Bay Area and Central Valley. And while promoters are notorious for over-promising, Hoffman has a track history of delivering some of the best up-and-comers.
Previously, Hoffman organized “Shakedown in Quaketown” events in Santa Cruz and “Riot at the Hyatt” cards in Monterey. Fighters that took part in these events and went on to win World Championships include “Sugar” Shane Mosley, Stevie Johnston, James Page and Gilroy’s Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero.
Saturday’s card will showcase boxers as light as 134 pounds and as heavy as 260 lbs. and will also include two female fighters duking it out.
The main event will feature Jesus “Chuy” Rodriguez of Salinas taking on the talkative Hector “The Mongoose” Alatorre for the California State Jr. Welterweight Championship. Rodriguez wore a dapper brown pinstripe suit with white wingtips and a matching fedora to the press conference, and promised to make nice with Alatorre over dinner after the fight – with the belt on his side of the table of course. Alatorre promised to provide his typical theatrics – when entering the ring for his last bout he wore a SpongeBob SquarePants costume at his son’s suggestion.
Gilroy’s Carlos Musquez (3-1-1) will take on Eloy Perez (8-0-1) in the 134-lb. semi main event. The matchup should be intriguing considering Musquez is expected to stalk the pesky Perez around the ring.
“I know he’s got some speed and movement,” Musquez said by telephone. “We’re going to try and be aggressive and see how that works, see what kind of response we can get out of him. It all depends on what he brings to the table.”
In the female bout, Cynthia Talmadge brings no nickname, but boasts two San Francisco Golden Glove championships as she will make her pro debut against Jennifer “The Razor” Barber.
When asked why she was jeopardizing her good looks, Talmadge smiled and replied, “I just started boxing and fell in love. You don’t want to get hit but you don’t worry about your hair and how your face looks.”
Former military men will help fill out the card with Brian Gordon (1-0, Army) taking on Maurice Slade (Pro Debut) and Cornell Davis (4-10) taking on Keith Spencer (1-0, Navy).
Rounding out the card is the endearing Constancio Alvarado (1-0) who will be fighting Sammy Yniguez (1-0). Alvarado has been trained by Team Garcia of Salinas and not long ago was picking crops in the fields after immigrating from Mexico.
