Many players get confused when we talk about releasing the club through impact.
No, this does not mean to throw it down the fairway. Releasing the club is letting the wrists roll over through impact, thus squaring the clubface up to the target.
This action also increases your clubhead speed as you are adding the action of the forearms to the swing.
Many players try to over-do this motion and, in doing this, they involve the shoulders and the entire upper body to simply roll the club over. If you think about opening a lock with a key by just using a rotation of your forearm, then you are simulating the proper amount of motion. You don’t use your entire shoulder to turn a key in a door handle do you?
This rolling of the wrists and forearms, which releases the club, happens on the downswing just before and during impact. But just use the wrists and forearms not the shoulders, too. This entire action is from the elbows to the hands and nothing more than that. The shoulders stay pointing at the target not opening up to the left.
Remember when all else fails, take a lesson. You’ll be surprised how much we can help.
