GILROY – By the time a Scotts Valley woman realized it wasn’t a four-way stop at Church and Seventh streets, it was too late. A sport-utility vehicle was bearing down on her.

The Chevrolet Blazer hit the woman’s Buick sedan and flipped over, injuring all four occupants at about 7:45 this morning. All four – three men and a 12-year-old boy – exited the vehicle under their own power, police said, and none of their injuries were life-threatening. One man was expected to be flown to a San Jose hospital by CalSTAR helicopter, but police said this would be a precautionary measure only, if it happened.

Ambulances took the other three occupants of the Blazer to be treated for minor injuries, according to Gilroy Fire Department personnel. Police and fire officials did not name anyone involved in the accident.

The Scotts Valley woman, who declined to give her name, said she was uninjured and refused medical treatment.

This elderly woman works in Gilroy at a health-care center. She usually takes Sixth Street to work and was used to the four-way stops there, she said. Today, she took Seventh Street, where the stops just west of Monterey Street are two-way. She stopped at Church Street but mistakenly thought that the traffic there had a stop sign as well, so she pulled out with the SUV approaching.

“It’s unbelievable,” the woman said afterward, waiting for her damaged car to be towed.
