The one-two punch of sisters Hanna and Olivia Tabron has been a beneficial combination for the Christopher High girls varsity basketball team during the first half of the season.
The Tabrons struck again Tuesday night as the Cougars broke the seal on Monterey Bay League play with a 53-39 nod over visiting North Monterey County.
Olivia Tabron, a 6-foot-1 freshman, posted 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four blocks. Meanwhile, Hanna Tabron, a 6-foot junior and returning first-team all-leaguer, contributed 13 points, five assists, six blocks and four steals.
Head coach Heather Stewart called Tuesday’s victory a “good team win.” And rightly so, with Haylee Peterson providing strong defense, and despite breaking her nose, sophomore Cydney Caradonna checking back into the game and finishing with seven points. Dejah Raoof added six points and Jenni Sigl had four. Pricilla Mora led all scorers with 23 points for the Condors (1-12.)
The Cougars (8-4 overall, 1-0 MBL) took a 25-19 edge into halftime and went up 39-26 entering the fourth quarter.
CHS is on the road Thursday night at Seaside, which defeated Monte Vista Christian 44-33 on Tuesday. Monterey also won its league opener, 51-20 over Pajaro Valley.

• Behind a season-high 19 points from Ashlee Williams and another 15 points from Athena Alarcon, the Gilroy High girls varsity basketball team cooled off an Everett Alvarez club 47-41 in the Tri-County Athletic League opener for both schools Tuesday night in Gilroy.
The Eagles (9-4 overall, 0-1 TCAL) came into the contest victorious in six of their previous seven outings. However, the play of its seniors Williams and Alarcon helped the Mustangs (7-4) get off of a 1-0 start in league as a matchup with San Benito looms Thursday in Hollister. Over the last five games, Williams has filled the void of leading scorer left by injured guards Michelle Sosa and Kaylana Mah, who along with senior Kayla Guardino are the only players returning from last season’s league championship team.
Brianna Barron chipped in nine points, prompting head coach Kort Jensen to credit his sophomore guard for playing a “fantastic all-around game.”
The Mustangs have now won 19 straight league games – their last defeat to a league opponent came against North Salinas Jan. 19, 2009.
Thursday’s game against the Balers is slated for 7 p.m.
• The Christopher High girls soccer team booted home league victory No. 1 with a 3-0 triumph over host Seaside in the Monterey Bay League debut for both on Tuesday night.
The Cougars (4-4 overall, 1-0 MBL) tallied three times in the second half, quickly doing away with the 0-0 halftime tie. Two of the goals came off the foot of Jasmine Contreras. Last year’s leading goal getter, sophomore Cailin McCarry, deposited the other.
CHS has a bye Thursday and goes back on the road Jan. 10 to face Monte Vista Christian at 3:30 p.m.
