The Gilroy High field hockey team wriggled out of a 2-0 first half deficit to salvage a 2-2 tie with rival Los Gatos on the road Tuesday.
“They scored two pretty quick ones on us, but we didn’t let that affect us,” GHS head coach Adam Gemar said. “I’m proud of the girls for not letting their heads get out of it.”
Emma Leach and Alex Kachakji set up Katrina Carter’s goal on a short corner, and Ezzie Gobea (from Carter) drew the Mustangs even in the second half. The game went to the seven-minute, 7-versus-7 overtime, where neither team broke the deadlock.
“We played a really good second half and an even better overtime,” Gemar said. “It wasn’t a win, but it felt like it a little at the end – just to come back like that.”
The Mustangs are 5-3-1 now in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mount Hamilton Division, which leaves them in third place with 16 points. Five games remain in the regular season, including one Thursday at home against Los Altos. Two big home contests are set for next week as Mitty and St. Francis are in town Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
