It wasn’t a beauty pageant, or even a fashion show, but a tea party for Madison Owens’ sixth birthday.

The day at Googooli Hair Salon for Children in Gilroy gave the girls a chance to play grown-up. Looking in the mirror Camille Gonzalez, 6, carefully applied bright red

lipstick as Natalie Reynolds, 5, and Charlotte Kennedy, 5, watched anxiously. They were next. At another station, with palms facing out, McKenzie Neal-Travis, 6, beamed admiring her newly painted pink nails. Meanwhile, girls were getting their hair braided into hearts and decorating picture frames for their own portraits with the birthday girl.

“I loved getting my hair done,” said Madison.

After their make-overs, the girls sat down at a long table neatly set with china saucers and champagne glasses. Each received a plate with a heart-shaped turkey and cheese sandwich, mini cookies and fruit. They chatted and raised a toast to Madison with apple cider.

The party didn’t end when Madison blew out her candles. Armed with party favors and the crafts they had made, the girls piled into a stretch limo. Each little lady enjoyed the next hour and a half as one by one they were dropped off at their homes, leaving their fairy tale world behind, but not forgotten.

“She felt like a princess,” said Cindy Owens Madison’s mother.
