GILROY – Naomi Ruiz scored 14 points Monday as Gaeta’s Ballers earned the first-half Women’s Basketball League title with a 34-29 decision over Western Tree Nursery at Solorsano Gymnasium.

The second half of the Women’s League begins Monday Jan. 5.

Gaeta’s, the defending league champion, raced to a 9-0 lead behind an Antoinette Bowe three-point field goal and buckets from Ruiz, Laura Hennessee and Kisha Webster. Western Tree responded with a 16-4 run to finish the first half with a 16-13 lead. Katie Harold and Michelle Deleissegues each garnered two field goals in the rally.

Gaeta’s Ballers scored the first nine points of the second half, keeping the lead the remainder of the contest.

Hennessee, the league’s leading scorer, opened the half with a field goal, then assisted on a Kisha Webster fast-break bucket. Ruiz capped the run with two free throws and a three-point basket.

Webster collected eight points, Hennessee five. Melanie Corona led the Nursery with seven points, Harold good for six.
