Ruth Slechta died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005 at her Gilroy home. She
was 66.

She was born in Long Beach in 1938 and earned her nursing credentials at Knapp College, Santa Barbara and a BS in Nursing at Linfield College, Ore. She worked as a registered nurse in several hospitals prior to moving to Gilroy in 1987. While in Gilroy, she worked as Director of Nursing at Hospice of the Valley, San Jose, and Sunnyview Manor, Cupertino.

She was an active member of Gilroy Presbyterian Church including: church choir, health ministries, bereavement team, and deacons. Other community activities included, President and committee chairman of AAUW (American Association of University Women); Board of Directors of Gilroy Salvation Army; President and committee chairman of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization); St. Louise Hospital Auxiliary; and team leader and committee co-chair of the Gilroy American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred of Gilroy; children, Patricia Slechta of Belmont and Richard Slechta of West Hollywood; granddaughter, Sarah Slechta of Belmont; sisters, Jane Cambouris of Lahina, Hawaii and Grace Givan of Parker, Colo.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1pm on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005 in Gilroy at the Gilroy Presbyterian Church.

A private burial will be held at the Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.

Arrangements under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
