Morgan Hill – Santa Clara Sporting 94 tallied three first-half goals en route to a 4-0 win over OV Mustangs Saturday.

Austin Chenoweth and Robert Rugerio supplied solid defense which led to a number of counterattacks for the Mustangs. Juan Montemayor made a couple of good saves, but a fluke lob shot just before halftime gave Santa Clara a 3-0 lead. The Mustangs’ Oscar Gutierrez had a shot on goal

in the dying seconds but it was saved.

Toward the end of the game more pressure from Sporting led to a save by David Molyneux in the 19th minute of the second half. A Sporting corner kick one minute later led to another goal.

On Sunday, the San Benito Tigers edged the Mustangs, 1-0. Gutierrez and Rugerio opened with shots on goal thanks to the play of midfielder Sam Reid. After a fine save by Montemayor, the Tigers beat him and went ahead in the 12th minute. The game remained tight thanks to a strong defense supplied by Chenoweth and Evan Schirle. The Mustangs earned a penalty kick in the 24th minute, but the shot by Rugerio was saved.

The second half started brightly for the Mustangs as Christian Ramirez and Reid each had shots on goal. Other chances by Ramirez and Bailey Schipper were thwarted by the Tigers. Scott Mercado and Jose Romo hustled in the midfield, and Ramirez and Rugerio each had chances up front, but couldn’t find the target.

Saves by Montemayor kept the Mustangs in the game, as did the play of defenders Miguel Gutierrez and Richard Walker.
