Gilroy – Local children will once again reap the benefits of a large chunk of change from the California Endowment. The company has awarded a $900,000 of its $7.5-million grant to Santa Clara’s Healthy Kids, which provides health care to children who are ineligible for programs such as Medi-Cal.
The Healthy Kids program provides comprehensive health care, including medical, dental, vision and mental health benefits to children from low-income families. The funds will provide medical coverage to about 900 children throughout Santa Clara County and about 8,000 children across the state.
“It’s a county-wide effort in terms of enrollment and outreach,” said Steve Robitaille, spokesman for Santa Clara Family Health Plan.
This is the fourth year SCFHP has received funding from The California Endowment. The SCFHP administers the Healthy Kids health plan and are members of Children’s Health Initiatives, an entity that conducts grassroots outreach and enrollment activities throughout Santa Clara County, including Gilroy, said Robitaille.
The California Health Initiative enrolls children into Medi-Cal and Healthy Families programs and also works with Healthy Kids to provide medical coverage to more than 23,000 children in Santa Clara, Alameda, San Mateo and San Francisco counties.
The California Endowment was established in 1996 and designed to expand access to affordable, quality health care for underserved individuals and communities and improve the health of all Californians. The Endowment awards grants to organizations and institutions that benefit the health and well-being of Californians.
