Lucas Joseph Byrd

Lucas Joseph Byrd was born Jan. 26, 2010 at Saint Louise Regional Hospital to Faith Lucero and Gus J. Byrd of Gilroy. He weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces.

Elijah Cameron Vargas

Elijah Cameron Vargas was born Feb. 13, 2010 at Saint Louise Regional Hospital to Celina Palacios and Emiliano Vargas of Gilroy. He weighed 6 pounds, 4 ounces.

HONORS

Raul Toledo

Army Spec. Raul F. Toledo has graduated from the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Crewmember Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

The course is designed to train the crew member in launch operations of various missiles and ammunition in quick strikes during combat. The student was trained to perform maintenance in various launchers and re-supply vehicles and reload ammunition on these type vehicles.

Students were trained to drive, operate, perform maintenance and ammunition re-loading of the M270 self-propelled loader launcher and the ammunition re-supply vehicle and trailer. They also learned to mount radio sets in vehicles, cables communication components in vehicle launcher, and operate and perform operator maintenance on communications equipment.

Toledo is the son of Nemecio and Yolanda Toledo of Hollister and a 1993 graduate of San Benito High School.

Kevin Collins

Air Force Airman 1st Class Kevin M. Collins has deployed to Southwest Asia to support the missions of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and the Combined Task Force-Horn of Africa. The servicemember will be a part of the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing.

Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces are also assisting in rebuilding Iraq’s economic and governmental infrastructure, and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and preserving Iraq’s sovereignty and independence as a democracy.

The mission of U.S. troops in Operation Horn of Africa is to detect, disrupt and defeat transnational terrorist groups in the region and to support coalition partner efforts to deny opportunity for re-emergence of terrorist networks in the central, eastern Horn of Africa.

Collins, a firefighter with two years of military service regularly assigned to the 9th Civil Engineering Squadron, Beale Air Force Base, Marysville.

He is the son of Jeff and Jessica Mello of Gilroy.

Kelly Johnson

Kelly Johnson of Morgan Hill received a bachelor’s degree in business management from Western Governors University. The online, nonprofit university awarded more than 120 graduates degrees at its semi-annual commencement ceremony held in Salt Lake City Feb. 20. WGU awarded degrees to more than 900 graduates from 48 states, the largest class of graduates to date. The degrees included 530 undergraduate and 458 graduate degrees.
