GHS wins 63-41 for fourth straight victory
Watsonville – The idea Tuesday was not to play down to the competition.
For one half, Gilroy struggled with that concept. But when GHS turned up the intensity in the second half, it was able to run from outmanned Monte Vista Christian.
With the biggest and smallest Gilroy players leading the way offensively, GHS ran its win streak to four with a 63-41 win over MVC.
“We started out slow,” said 5-7 Kevin Siha, who gave Gilroy a boost offensively off the bench in both halves. “When we started going, we began to click. We’re building team chemistry. We’re not there yet.”
Siha, who led GHS with 13 points, hit two jumpers to start a six-point run that wiped out a 15-10 deficit. Six-11 Spencer Ford, who had 12 points, keyed a 10-2 finish that put Gilroy ahead 27-21 at halftime.
GHS broke it open in the third quarter, playing better man-to-man defense, getting numerous steals and finding the open players. Siha and Ford had five points each as Gilroy outscored MVC (1-9) 24-10 in the third period.
“We stepped it up in the second half and got a little more focused,” GHS coach Bud Ogden said.
Javin Charlot had a strong floor game with eight steals and five assists. The 6-2 senior point guard also clamped down defensively on Tosh Widger, holding the MVC guard to three second-half points after he kept the host team in the game with 11 in the first half. Derek Jensen had three steals and five assists, and Marshad Johnson had 13 rebounds.
Gilroy shot well from the field, making 27-of-50 shots. It was a different story at the foul line where GHS was just 8-of-20.
“This follows the format of our last three games,” Ogden said, comparing the contest to the three Hagen tournament games. “We just wanted to run stuff and not play at a level where we shouldn’t be. We were playing for the future.”
That future is at 7pm Thursday when Gilroy welcomes St. Francis-Mountain View to Bob Hagen Memorial Gymnasium. The Lancers are 7-0.
“They will show us pressure we haven’t seen in a while,” Ogden said. “We’re going to have to be better.”
JV: Raul Quintanar, Ryan Costa and Devon Robeson combined for 22 points as Gilroy (8-2) defeated MVC.
Frosh: GHS (6-4) whipped MVC 56-18 as Michael Aldridge had 13 points and five steals, Greg Hamik had 10 points and four assists and Nico Sandoval had eight points and seven steals.
