Gilroy – Gilroy was without field general Vanessa Wilkins and needed to get some offense from other players.
Dana Schoeneman was dominant again in the paint, and she had second-half help as the Mustangs extended their win streak to four by whipping host Yerba Buena 41-23.
Schoeneman had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Gilroy (7-1). Although she was the only player in double figures, other girls stepped up in the second half. The Mustangs scored more points (15) in the third quarter than they had in the first half (14) when they struggled with their shooting.
“We shot very poorly in the first half,” assistant coach Ana Patejdl said. “We told them they were taking good shots, but we just weren’t hitting them. We told them at halftime to keep their confidence, to think they could make the next shot.”
Russhelle Preeshl scored all five of her points during the third quarter as GHS extended a 14-4 halftime lead to 29-12. Laura Spellman had six points during the fourth quarter as the Mustangs kept the Warriors at bay.
Marisa Montenegro led Yerba Buena with nine points. The Warriors (2-7) have dropped six straight.
Gilroy’s zone defense was effective at the start, and the Mustangs were able to also use pressure defense to keep the Warriors from getting good looks at the basket.
Only eight GHS players were available with Amanda Spellman still out with an injured ankle and Wilkins resting an ailing back.
