GILROY – Vehicle wrecks over the weekend proved dire for those involved, especially a 22-year Gilroy woman who remains in critical condition at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, a hospital spokesperson reported around midday Monday.

Claudia Servin was traveling southbound U.S. Highway 101 about 5 p.m. Saturday, when she experienced a flat tire that caused her vehicle to overturn several times, pinning her inside.

Rescue workers had to cut Servin out of the 1989 Ford Bronco she was driving. She was in cardiac arrest, and rescue workers resuscitated her at the scene before taking her by ambulance to nearby Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy. From there, she was flown to Valley Medical Center.

Also in the vehicle was Servin’s sister Maribell, in her 20s. She lost consciousness as a result of the crash and had a mouth injury and neck and back pain, according to CHP. She also was flown to Valley Medical Center.

The accident is under investigation.

Two injured at First and Miller

On Sunday, two people were injured in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of First Street and Miller Avenue in Gilroy. About 11 a.m., a large pickup truck broadsided a Cadillac-type sedan.

Police said neither of the drivers’ injuries were life-threatening, although at least one person was described as seriously wounded. They wer both flown to a San Jose trauma center.

The sedan was knocked off the road and came to rest inside a bay at a Jiffy Lube car-care shop. Police said the car fit into the bay perfectly and did not hit the structure of the building.

Still critical

Meanwhile, an elderly woman who ran a red light Friday at Leavesley Road and Monterey Street was still in critical condition at midday Monday at San Jose Medical Center. The woman had a severe arm injury as well as a head injury, according to Gilroy police.

Suspected drunk hits cyclists

About 10 a.m. Saturday, a suspected drunk driver struck a tandem bicycle on Gilman Road near Holsclaw Road, the CHP reported. Cyclists Jim Pannunzio, 44, and his wife Rebecca, 49, of Sunnyvale, sustained minor injuries, CHP officers said. They were participating in a bike race.

The CHP arrested the driver of the 1988 Honda, Longino Martinez, 24, of Morgan Hill, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor. He was pulling onto Gilman Road from a residence and did not see the bike as he pulled out, according to the CHP.
