Gilroy High’s track and field teams got a chance to see how they stack up with some of the area’s best Saturday, competing in the K-Bell Invite at Los Gatos High School.
Kathleen Miller was impressive in the 3200 meters, crossing the finish line in 11 minutes, 57.85 seconds. Along with Lindsey Foster, who set a personal record in the 100 meters with a time of 13.83 seconds, it appears the long distance runners and sprinters will be a point of strength for the girls’ team as the season progresses.
“I was very happy to see Kathleen get under 12 (minutes),” Gilroy coach Jeff Myers said.
“Lindsey is still very green when it comes to competing on the track, but she has the desire to win that you love to see.”
Derek Pesta and Travis Reyes each recorded season bests in the 3200 and 200 meters, respectively. Pesta, who had been a bit under the weather entering the Invite, finished in 10:09.05, while Reyes blazed halfway around the track in 24.05.
Peter Guenther had a mixed bag by taking fifth in the 100HH but false-starting in the 100.
The varsity girls team took on Salinas in a dual meet Thursday, losing 78-49. The score was not completely telling, though, as Gilroy does not have a full roster of jumpers and zero pole-vaulters.
“We have no vaulters at this time and that puts us in a hole 9-0 right off the bat,” Myers said. “But the girls competed hard from the very beginning by winning the first race of the day, the 4 x 100 relay. Sometimes the final score does not tell the whole story in track.”
