SAN JOSE – Calgary shook off a two-goal outburst by the San Jose Sharks in the third period to earn a 3-2 victory at sold-out SAP Center.
Matthew Tkachuk, the sixth overall pick in this year’s Entry Draft, scored his second goal of the game with 15:39 gone in the third period to give the Flames the two points.
San Jose has a two-game losing streak and remains in second place in the Pacific Division with 12 points after 11 games.
The Sharks fought back from a 2-0 deficit after two periods to pull even at 2-2 by the 9:18 mark of the third.
Brent Burns began the home team scoring with a power-play goal 35 seconds into the period. Burns beat goaltender Chad Johnson from the high slot off a feed from Joe Pavelski. Joe Thornton added an assist, moving past Mats Sundin into 27th place all-time in assists with 1,350.
Marc-Edouard Vlasic sent a hard shot from the left point toward the net after Chris Tierney won an offensive zone face-off. Melker Karlsson was at the front of the net and tapped the puck under Johnson’s pad for the equalizer at 9:18.
After hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night, the Sharks begin a season-high six-game road trip on Election Day in Washington against the Capitals. Following the road trip, San Jose hosts the New Jersey Devils on Monday Nov 21.
Calgary began the scoring with two goals in a span of 93 seconds of the second period.
Neither club scored in the first period, each producing seven shots on net. The Sharks went on three power plays, the Flames one, without success.
Calgary came up with an even-strength goal at 16:32 of the second period for a 1-0 advantage. Winger Michael Ferland controlled the puck in the right circle in the attacking zone. As Ferland moved toward the back of the net, he was able to drop the puck back to Troy Brouwer for the one-timer into the open net.
A combination of the oldest and youngest of the Flames gave the visitors a 2-0 cushion at the 18:05 mark.
Deryk Engelland, a 34-year-old defenseman playing in his 400th NHL game, dropped the puck to the 18-year-old Tkachuk, playing in his 10th NHL game. Tkachuk lined a low shot from the top of the right circle that went between goaltender Martin Jones’ legs.
Calgary has won five of the last six meetings with the Sharks at SAP Center.
