Dear Editor,
In response to your reader’s letter that cheerleading is NOT a sport …
While cheerleading is performing,, it is MOST definitely a sport. It is NO less demanding than ice skating and that is considered a sport.
The endurance, drive and dedication required for both SPORTS of cheerleading and ice skating are more demanding physically and emotionally than football. Hence there are more injuries in competitive cheerleading than there are in football.
Additionally, male cheerleaders who have once played football and wrestled clearly state cheerleading is more demanding on the body than either sport.
Just because cheerleading doesn’t have a clear, decisive winner like football and baseball doesn’t matter. Competitive cheerleading is determined by subjective decisions and likes of judges. It is very much a sport.
Your reader needs to give more clarity to the definition of sports when ice skating and synchronized swimming are both considered sports.
