While Gilroy is gearing up for what it hopes to be a long playoff run, several of its players pocketed Tri-County Athletic League postseason honors.
Lauryn Chris, Amanda Tellez, Jasmine Perez and Caitlyn Pierotti were named to the All-TCAL first team, while Kylie Herrada and Patty Olvera received second-team honors.
Chris, the Mustangs junior second baseman and leadoff hitter, batted .365 in league play and was the spark at the top of the order.
“She had to get herself on and she did her job,” Gilroy coach Catherine Hallada said. “She’s also a very quick baserunner. Her smarts on the bases helped her score a lot of runs.”
Tellez, a senior third baseman who will take her game to the University of Hawai’i-Hilo next season, finished the league season with a .333 average.
“She was very consistent throughout the entire year,” Hallada said. “She didn’t really have any low times or high times. Defensively, she talks and is smart on the field and always knows what to do.”
Jasmine Perez provide the thump in the middle of the order. She batted .351 in TCAL action and two of her team-high seven home runs were hit during league action.
“She always could come through with a big solid hit,” Hallada said of the sophomore outfielder.
Pierotti, Gilroy’s junior catcher, proved to be one of the team’s best clutch hitter.
“She was one of those hitters that whenever people were on base, she could always get an RBI,” Hallada said of Pierotti, who led the team with nine RBIs in TCAL play.
Herrada, a junior, bounced back and forth from the Nos. 2 and 9 spots in the order and provided speed on the bases and bat control as a slapper and bunter while the senior Olvera was one of the rocks in the circle for the Mustangs. She was 5-3 in league play, with two of her losses coming to league champion San Benito.
Junior catcher Brittany Balanesi rounded out the honors for Gilroy as she was named to the Pursuing Victory With Honor team.
