Bruins defend league crown; open playoffs today
GILROY — The boys soccer team from Brownell Middle School clinched a second straight league title Monday with a decisive 4-0 victory over Britton to end the regular season.
Both teams entered the game undefeated in league play and created several scoring chances.
The Bruins struck first with goals by Andrew Jimenez and Alan Hermosillo off assists by Alex Flores. Brownell protected the lead behind solid play by its backline of Antony Ambriz, Ephren Pineda, Manuel Gonzalez and David Solorzano.
Bruins goalkeepers Francisco Hernandez and Joseth Verdiquel came up with big stops, including a fingertip save by Hernandez just before halftime.
Flores continued the offensive attack in the second half, scoring twice off crisp feeds by Pineda and Solorzano.
Brownell, which extended its winning streak in league to 19 games, outscored its opponents 27-7 this season.
