The Chaos Blue defeated the Nor Cal Legends 12-7 in the
championship game.
Salinas – The Gilroy Chaos Blue 10U travel softball team was back at it over the weekend in Salinas.
After taking first in the Back to School Bash two weeks ago, the Chaos Blue found again knocked off opponents for another tournament championship.
The championship game pitted the Chaos Blue against the Nor Cal Legends.
The girls battled hard in an intense game, which saw lead change hands four times. Eventually, the Chaos rallied for the 12-7 victory in five innings.
Aggressive base running and timely hits made by Emily Boykin, Julia Rodriguez, Camryn Crowley, and Shelby Velasco brought Chaos erased a 2-0 deficit to a one-run lead in the top of the second inning.
The Legends came back strong though, plating a combined five runs in the bottom of the second and third innings.
With Chaos down 7-4 and time running out, the girls knew that they would have to turn on the heat in order to win the game. In the top of the fourth inning, Chaos tied the game with the help of Olivia Moore, who was 3-for-4 in the contest. Moore also hit a home run against The Spirit the day before. Amber Herrera, whose outstanding throw-downs to second base and fielded by shortstop Boykin, kept the Legends from scoring the remainder of the game.
The Chaos’ strongest offensive effort was in the top of the fifth when they surged ahead by five runs. The combined pitching efforts of Juliana Santiago and Emily Fredricks kept the Legends off balance. Brittney Gitmed’s and Lindsey Buessing’s defensive plays in the field also made things difficult for the Legends to get anything going.
The girls began their run to the championship game going 2-1 in pool play Saturday, starting with a 13-1 win over the Peninsula Pride, then settling for a tie in the next game against the Magic, 2-2. The final game of the day was a win against Spirit of Morgan Hill, 4-1.
Sunday’s contests to reach the finals were against Tabu – and 11-4 triumph – with and 5-0 shut out of the Spirit.
