The Christopher High softball team upended defending Monterey Bay League champion Monterey High with an exhilarating 4-3 triumph in 11 innings on Thursday night.

“It was an awesome game by both teams,” CHS manager Allison Robinson said. It’s a big one for us because we were at their place. Our defense played really well.”

The game was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. The international tiebreaker rule – a runner is placed on second base to begin each half innings starting in the 10th. Each team scored a run in the 10th frame.

Mariah Martinez was placed on second to start the 11th frame. She was moved to third on a sacrifice  bunt by Johnna Blank and scored on a RBI fielder’s choice by Arianna Vasquez.

The Cougars (6-2 overall, 2-0 MBL) received 14 strikeouts from pitcher Aly Olvera, one game removed from a no-hitter against Monte Vista Christian on Tuesday.

Martinez had two hits and an RBI and Olvera also had a RBI.

Monterey breezed through the MBL last season, posting a 12-0 record. The Toreadores, who hadn’t lost a MBL contest since May 7, 2010 have won three of the last four league titles.

Christopher is currently on a five-game winning streak.
