The Spirit of Morgan Hill 10U B softball team, comprised of players from around South County, capped off a six-game winning streak by winning its final tournament of the season July 3-5 in Carmel.
Spirit clinched the title in dramatic fashion, beating Carmel 8-7 in the championship game.
Alyssa Medeiros and Eelexus Muniz both scored in the first inning, thanks to help from Dre DeJesus and Maddy Torres.
Medeiros, DeJesus, Muniz, and Torres widened the lead with scores in the second inning, but Carmel rebounded with three homers in the third.
Morgyn Tilton and Medeiros gained a one-run lead for Spirit in the bottom of the third and scored off DeJesus and Muniz hits.
In the top of the fourth inning, the final batter for Carmel hit a long fly ball into centerfield. The batter was on her way to home plate when Morton, Maggie Frisby, DeJesus, and Bueno combined to throw out the potential tying run for the final out of the championship game.
Pitchers Muniz, Tilton and Frisby all tossed winning games with the support of Bella Altamirano.
Alexis Bueno, Medeiros and Maddy Torres all played solid games at catcher. Bueno played four games for Spirit’s squad.
DeJesus, Teah Morton, Dilila Rodriguez and Anissia Cornejo all played stellar defense and chipped in with several hits apiece. They helped propel the offense to comeback victories over Scotts Valley, King City, Pacific Grove and Carmel.
Tom Luther and sisters Frankie and Cori Kellett coached the Spirit team this season.
