Competing at the Stanford Invite held Friday and Saturday in Palo Alto, amongst many of the best high school runners in the Bay Area, Gilroy High had a mixed bag of performances.

Sprinter and hurdler Peter Guenther continued to show signs that he will be one of the premier runners in the section by the end of the season, taking 15th in the 110 High Hurdles with a time of 15.68 seconds. The mark is a new personal record for Guenther, who beat his former best by .08 seconds.

After struggling a bit to begin the season, Guenther appears to coming on at the right time.

“I think Peter had to go through some tough times, learning experiences,” Gilroy coach Jeff Myers said. “Sometimes you have to fall down to make yourself stronger.”

Sarah Unadia competed in the high jump – barely.

There was miscommunication as to when her event would begin so Unadia arrived just minutes before she was supposed to compete.

Her jump of 4-feet-10-inches was below her best, but not completely unexpected considering she had no time to warm up.

Myers said he knows Unadia can do better, as she cleared 5-feet-2-inches in practice Monday.

The showing by the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team of Elise Ogle, Kathleen Miller, Brandie Rodriguez and Amanda Krueger was a bit of a disappointment after a strong showing last week, finishing in 25th with a time of 13:25.20.

“Maybe the fact that they ran the day before had an effect,” Myers said. “Plus they had never been to a big meet like that before. … They might have been overwhelmed a bit.”

The Mustangs had a dual meet a day prior to Friday’s invite.

Guenther and Unadia could be competing in the prestigious Arcadia Invite taking place April 11-12, but results as to who qualified as alternates were unavailable as of press time. Myers said he will take both athletes to the event if they each make the cut.
