Gilroy – The Gilroy girls rolled to an easy 5-1 victory over North Salinas at Garcia-Elder Field Tuesday. The Lady ‘Stangs took a 3-1 lead in the first half thanks in large part to goals Kristi Figueroa, Jenny Loi and Nubia Diaz de Leon. In the second half Gilroy’s final two goals came off the foot of Amanda Bruce and Joann Pedroza respectively.
Figueroa’s goal from 18 yards out got the ‘Stangs on the board first.
“It was a great way to start the game, scoring in the first seven minutes. We were fired up,” said head coach Jose Hernandez.
But the high would be short lived as North Salinas answered with the game-tying goal off of a free kick.
“After we scored, we stalled and got a little sloppy,” admitted head coach Jose Hernandez.
But then Gilroy put the game away with four unanswered goals.
North Salinas came into the game 4-0 in TCAL with wins against Live Oak, Hollister, Salinas and Sobrato.
With the victory Gilroy improved to 3-0 and took over first place in the TCAL. In the team’s first three league games they’ve scored 16 goals and allowed just three. Two of those on free kicks.
“It’s the first time we’ve been undefeated in league. Two years ago we lost all of our league games and last year we started the season 0-1,” Hernandez said. “It’s also the first time we’ve started the season with more wins than losses. It’s great right now. We’re kinda in the driver’s seat right now.”
The Mustangs next TCAL game is Thursday at home against Salinas.
