Gilroy – Nobody but the Gilroy Mustangs players know for sure exactly what head basketball coach, Bud Ogden, said to the team when he called a time-out with 5:38 left in the third quarter.

Whatever it was . . . it worked.

With the game tied 30-30 Ogden signaled an official and proceeded to bring his team in tight.

“I really didn’t tell them anything we hadn’t talked about at the break. We were playing flat. Our win Saturday was such a high that the kids had a tough time getting up for this one,” Ogden admitted. “I called the time-out to, let’s just say, I needed to get their attention.”

Mission accomplished.

Whatever the words, however the tone, the ‘Stangs (8-6) were a different team over the game’s final 13:38 as they outscored Monte Vista Christian (8-4) 33-13 for a 63-43 victory in the team’s last game of 2005.

The ‘Stangs now head into the Holiday break with another win in their holsters and won’t take to the hardwood again until Jan. 5 when they play host to arch rival San Benito.

Ryan Chisolm really caught fire in the decisive third quarter, scoring eight of his game-high 15 points during that eight-minute stretch.

“During the time out Coach just told us that we had to pick up our defensive intensity. We were playing real flat in that first half but from that point on we really turned it on and you see the result,” said Chisolm as he pointed to the scoreboard. “We were letting them hang around because we weren’t playing good defense. Once we did that we put them away and beat them the way we should have,”

It looked early on as if the game would be a laugher for the ‘Stangs who jumped out to an early 11-2 lead. But Monte Vista Christian refused to go quietly.

Monte Vista put together a 20-10 run of its own to grab its first lead of the game at 22-21 with 1:04 left in the first half.

But Vinnie DeLorenzo’s three-pointer at the buzzer gave the ‘Stangs back the momentum as well as the halftime lead.

“It’s a nice way to end the half. It’s an exciting high note,” Ogden said. “And the three points doesn’t hurt either.”

The two teams exchanged baskets early in the second half but the strategically called time-out changed everything.

While Chisolm was the only Mustang finishing in double figures Dominik Wilkens, Jeremy Treschera and DeLorenzo were knocking on the door with 9 points each.

“It was hard to get the kids pumped up for this game, it really was. But in that second half we came together and played the kind of basketball we’re capable of,” Ogden said. “We have to learn to bring the same intensity to the game whether we’re playing Mitty or Monte Vista. We have to have the same mindset. We finally got to the point where we were playing defense. It was a real solid effort by the whole team and it’s a great way to go into the break.”
