Junior Varsity Squad Matches Varsity Boys; Wins Bob Hagen
Memorial Tournament With 57-52 Victory over Aptos
The Gilroy JV boys made it a Mustang sweep of first place by defeating Aptos 57-52 Saturday at the Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament.
In the championship game, All-Tourney selection Robert Mercado and Marshad Johnson led the Mustangs with 15 points apiece. Jacob Dexter, who was chosen as the Tournament MVP after the game, chipped in seven assists and three steals.
In a big 72-51 win over Monterey in the semifinals, Gilroy had five players – Mercado (15 points), Derek Jensen (13), Dexter (12), Johnson (12) and Stephen Gal (10) – score in double figures.
Gilroy enjoyed a 69-40 victory over St. Francis Central Coast Catholic in the first round. Again Johnson (14 points), Jensen (12 points), Dexter (8 assists, 7 steals) and Mercado (11 points) were the big contributors.
The JV ‘Stangs sit at 8-2 and take on Monta Vista Christian tonight at home at 5:30pm.
