GILROY – Some Gilroy businesses will be affected by street closures next week as the city repairs several main streets in the south and east sides of town.
The city and Santa Clara County are starting a joint street maintenance project beginning Monday and continuing through Thursday. A second phase will begin in a few weeks.
“This is more of a maintenance coat that we put on the roadway,” rather than a complete re-surfacing, said Carla Ruigh, the city’s operations services manager.
On Monday, most of San Ysidro Avenue, just east of U.S. 101, will be closed from Las Animas Avenue in the north to Leavesley Avenue in the south. One lane of traffic will remain open at all times, however.
“In general, what we’re letting people know is, the street may be closed essentially from 7 in the morning until 8 at night,” Ruigh said. “We’re expecting that they may be open sooner than that, but worst case scenario, if it’s a foggy or overcast day, it could take longer… .”
On Tuesday, Eigleberry Street, one block west of Monterey, will be closed between Sixth Street south to Eighth Street.
Monterey Street also will be closed to traffic Tuesday, from Seventh Street south to Tenth Street.
On Wednesday, the city will not allow cars on the portion of Thomas Road that connects Santa Teresa Boulevard to West Luchessa, next to the Uvas Creek. Thomas Road between Santa Teresa and Mesa Road also will be closed.
On Thursday, the stretch of Uvas Park Drive between Wren Avenue and Miller Avenue, next to the levee, will be shut for repairs. Gurries Drive, one block north of First Street, will be closed off between Hanna and Church streets.
All businesses that will be affected have already received notice from the city.
