Gilroy – Kelli Marshall, a student at Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville, won an Honorable Mention award this week for her color photography at the 52nd Annual High School Show sponsored by the Santa Cruz Art League.

All Santa Cruz County high schools, including public, private and home schools, were invited to participate. More than 25 high schools submitted pieces for the show.

In addition to Marshall, five other MVCS students received awards in a variety of media.

“Monte Vista Christian School is one of the last high schools in Watsonville with a darkroom,” said Matt Watson, photography instructor at the school. “There are techniques you learn in a darkroom that you just don’t get when you’re doing digital photos.”

The show continues through Sunday, May 20. Hours are 12 to 5pm Wednesday through Saturday, and 12 to 4pm Sunday. The Art League is located at 526 Broadway, Santa Cruz.

Fire Season Begins

Gilroy – Monday marked the beginning of fire season in Santa Clara County, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesmen. During fire season, higher temperatures make wildfires more common. In response, Cal Fire increases its firefighter and dispatch staffing and issues safety recommendations to the public, such as using equipment during cooler times of day.

Get Tech at Gilroy Library

Gilroy – Explore buoyancy at the Tech Challenge, part of the Get Tech program aimed at bringing science and technology to 7th and 8th graders at 4pm Wednesday, at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St.

Free Film Series for Adults

Gilroy – Adults ages 55 and up can participate in a free class/film series through the Gavilan College Department of Noncredit Instruction. Humanities 767, “Film Classics” is designed to study the facts, fantasy, history and trivia of classic and modern films. The background and history of each film and its performance will be compared and contrasted. This class is “open entry” meaning that participants do not have to attend all class sessions.

Instructor Grant Richards is a graduate of Gilroy High School and Gavilan College and teaches film history and film production at Gavilan College.

Upcoming films are:

Wednesday, “On Golden Pond;” May 16, “Driving Miss Daisy;” and May 23, “The Usual Suspects.”All films will be screened at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse on Wednesday afternoons from 2 to 5pm, now through June 6. Students may register in class, or may call in advance to 848-4859.

Incorporation Workshops Slated

San Martin – The Local Agency Formation Commission is processing a proposal for the incorporation of the town of San Martin. In order to provide information on the process and requirements, LAFCO will be conducting two workshops: the first from 6:30 to 8:30pm Thursday at the San Martin Lions Club Hall, 12415 Murphy Ave. The final workshop takes place from 10:30am to noon, Wednesday, May 30 at the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors’ Chambers, 70 West Hedding St., 1st floor, San Jose. The workshops will provide an overview of:

-Purpose and proposed boundaries of incorporation

-Incorporation process and legal requirements

-Timeline and costs involved in processing the San Martin incorporation proposal

Pianist Visits Gavilan

Gilroy – The Gavilan College Music Department presents pianist Andreas Werz. The show begins at 7:30pm Saturday, May 19 in the theater on the campus at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Werz is the artistic director of the internationally renowned recital series, “Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts.” Werz has performed extensively in the United States, Mexico, France, Italy, Spain and Germany. He is also in his 21st year as a professor of piano at California State University, Fresno.
