Dear Editor:

With the approaching celebration of Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, it is an excellent occasion to familiarize ourselves with the Earth Charter – “a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society.”

This international document was drafted in the year 2000 “to inspire all peoples with a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the human family and the larger living world.”

The Earth Charter is “an expression of hope and a call to help create a global partnership … based on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice and a culture of peace.” Please join with people all around the world who care for about our future by learning more about the Earth Charter and applying its principles in our individual and social behavior. The context is challenging. We face many critical choices and the need for a commitment to a more sustainable way of life is more urgent than ever. Support and endorse the values of the Earth Charter! Visit www.earthcharter.org.
