Dear Editor:

My, my what a surprise!

After posting a job opening – Information Technology Manager – on its Web site, on the ED-JOIN Web site, and even a Gilroy Dispatch advertisement; after screening 57 applicants and interviewing those considered “qualified,” the Gilroy Unified School District announced (New leader for GUSD’s tech effort – Aug. 12) their choice: Rob van Herk. How surprising!

Mr. van Herk, since May 2002, has been a GUSD volunteer primarily – working to upgrade and improve the district’s computer technology. After those 16-plus months immersed in GUSD’s technology program, his understanding/insight into what was needed made him highly qualified. So why yet another GUSD shuck-and jive? Why waste personnel time within GUSD processing responses to 56 applicants who responded to a false promise – who wasted their time seeking something that wasn’t there?

What the article failed to mention, and what the GUSD Board and its superintendent will refuse to discuss (another shuck-and-jive): how many dollars will this new IT manager, and his two-man team, cost Gilroy taxpayers yearly? How much in individual salaries, benefits, perks, expenses – and how will taxpayers know they’re getting their money’s worth? Is this new position and its support but one more example of administrative bureaucratic greed at the expense of students’ needs?

Pay attention, Gilroyans – sadly, no one within GUSD will be answering!
