Today I write about Gilroy High School. My hope is that I can give you all a closer view of something very important to me. Talent surges through the veins of Gilroy High. I know this since I am a student.
I am not a distant watcher, a parent, or even a teacher. I live amongst a body of incredibly ingenious teenagers. Some members of our community strike at our school’s curriculum, but we produce Harvard graduates. Some mock our sports, but who is the quarterback of the 49ers? And, closest to me, our school houses a font of creativity.
Few high schools have such a set of vibrant arts programs. Our chamber choir has won in state competitions. Our marching band was champion in its class a year ago, and third in class this year. The plays put on are first rate, and the art classes show great new talent. As the Editor-in-Chief of the Gilroy High School Art and Literary Magazine, I ask that everyone, before they let fly more criticism of the high school, at least acknowledge its creativity. Yes, the school has flaws, as does any school, but I want people to realize that there is still so much being done.
Every year, the Art and Literary Magazine puts forth a collection of student work. Within it is found the vibrancy of youth. I am always amazed at what I see submitted. The work is from anyone at the school, and from just a small sampling one can see that students at Gilroy High are not suffocating. Their release of emotion, their cathartic works, range from humorous to satirical to emotional.
But there is a price to pay. Literally, a cost to put forth this work. It takes upwards of nine-thousand dollars to publish the Art/Lit Magazine. This year, I would love if the community would support our work.
Donate, and help bloom a powerful reminder that there are imaginative, hardworking students at Gilroy High. Call 847-0451 or Susie Huerta (the Art/Lit advisor) at the High School at 847-2424×8544. A donation of forty dollars or more will get you a copy of this year’s magazine and last year’s as well. Please consider helping the creativity at Gilroy High School.
Thank you.
